Micrasterias is a desmid with flat, disc-like cells which are almost divided into two. Each semicell is further divided into five lobes by deep indentations and these lobes are variously subdivided again.

Usually in oligotrophic, acid waters; several species are common in bog pools in association with Sphagnum moss.


 


 

Photographs of material in culture, 1998, species unnamed but apparently M. americana Ehrenb. ex Ralfs, a species generally with Sphagnum in bog pools, widespread in suitable habitats in Britain and elsewhere in the world.
